MIT 2021 - Discovery

Design Thinking Process
Design Thinking Process
The first part of the 'Design Thinking process' is 'discovery'.

Picture this - sitting in a school hall filled with local parents, murmuring "Why am I here?".  Moderating the meeting is BOT Chairman Oxley (Jenny) alongside Real Estate Burt (Dorothy) to discuss the challenges faced at fictitious Kuaotunu Area School.

Each MIT 2021 member was given a character from the local community parents to act out (e.g a professor, plumber, celebrity artist etc .. ).

As the BOT Chairman presented each issue to the local body, there was a stirring of tension from disgruntled parents.  As it unfolds each issue was from each MIT member.

Getting involved in the role-play allows you to wear someone else's shoes.  Having a different lens, being intentional when listening.  It was quite confronting when asking for honest answers.

This allows us to look at things with a broad-minded aspect.  For us to return back to our initial challenge, review and reconsider.

  1. Kia Ora Migi, This activity really helped in understanding the design thinking process and the importance of beginning to ask questions with WHY. It was fun as well through role playing. Looking forward to seeing you Migi at our Hui on Monday 29th March at KPMG.
    Thank you.

  2. Hi Migi, I love your writing style. I feel like you are setting the scene for Season One:Episode 1 of a blockbuster! You were all great sports playing along with this scenario, and it did highlight areas of confusion and supported the Discovery process.
